Ultra high temperature exhaust insulation & cladding

Design, development, fabrication and installation of bespoke 1400mm diameter exhaust uptake insulation boxes for each of the four main engines on three cross Channel passenger ferries.

The old soft insulation blanket design was ineffective due to there being 30mm of vibration between the compensator and reducer. We stripped, measured and redesigned the system from turbo to bellows using 1mm Aluzinc sheet.

We developed a system, in which everything is made in two halves and the insulation inside the metal casing is pin welded to the outer shell, meaning ease of removal and reinstatement. The radial bend rests on the top of the reducer and the vibration is cancelled out by this.

Each individual engine exhaust had a different exit route and therefore each one had to be designed independently. The system has been in place now for 4 years without any maintenance
